Paul Davies – Hunger

One of my favourite British sound designers, his work with Steve McQueen is particularly striking and effective. I’ve found a great interview with him on his work during Hunger.

Some quotes I’ve found beneficial to my practice;

(An good description of using foley to force audience attention towards a character); “we would want to be able to foreground well recorded Foley in the mix so as to “zoom” in to the characters in the film, to draw closer to them and feel their physical presence.”

(An illuminating passage describing the approach to the sound design and how it altered as the protagonist came closer to death. This representation has been attacked fantastically); “we would be adopting a very spare sound style, focussing on one thing at a time, in a very controlled and precise way. So although the film may seem “realistic” on the surface, it is actually quite stylised underneath, and you are right about the change in the final third, this was a conscious decision I made that as Bobby is moving closer to death the atmospheres changes and there is even the subtle inclusion of electronic sound design elements. From the way this final third was shot, it felt to me that Bobby was already in the ante room of the afterlife as it were, and so the sound becomes more esoteric, nebulous and floating.”
